Review: Shandong

We are addicted to Shandong Restaurant’s Chinese food and find ourselves obliged to show it to our out-of-town friends and family when they come to visit. Located in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown, this cozy spot normally has a line out the door, so we typically order take out (if ordering by phone during peak hours, the phone line can become busy – just keep trying!).

As you walk into the restaurant you are greeted by cooks rolling handmade noodles and dumplings. We have never had a chow mein that is fresh and delicious!

The devil is in the details here – fresh vegetables, good quality meat, and when you order sweet and sour pork to go, they ensure crunchiness by leaving the sweet and sour sauce in a container for you to add to the pork when you get home.

Our recommendations for this place are of course the spicy chicken chow mein with handmade noodles, mu-Shu pork, eggplant, pot stickers, sweet and sour pork, dumplings of any kind, leek pancakes, really ANYTHING ON THE MENU!

P.S. there is another Shandong in San Francisco that is NOT related to the Oakland spot. If ordering by phone, make sure you are calling the Oakland location.
